In a truly dynamic reshuffling of the American art world, ‘AMERICAN AFRICAN AMERICAN’ looks anew at the exciting and increasingly powerful signature of an innovative, articulate and growing number of American artists who look to their blackness or black culture to create exceptional works of art. Curated by Arnold Lehman, Brooklyn Museum Director Emeritus, this exhibition brings together more than two dozen American artists with works created over the last three decades. It offers a brilliant next chapter in the art made in the United States with new vocabulary and redefinition at every turn. A starring role is given to a remarkable 1981 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat acting as the exceptional and critical marker between an artistic trail dating back to the formative and revolutionary years of African American art of the 1960s, ’70s and early ’80s, and the beginning of that new chapter.
